IF YOU WANT TO BE A SUCCESSFUL BLOGGER AND ENTREPRENEUR, YOU ARE GOING TO NEED “GRIT ” AND “BALLS” COURAGE AND PERSISTENCE.

I am pretty sure you will agree that when embarking on any new adventure,  it is much better to know what we are getting ourselves into.  I DID NOT!  but after reading this post, you will definitely have a far more accurate idea of what to expect.

They say, forewarned is forearmed. When it comes to starting a blog and building an online business, it is really helpful to know the facts. the simple truth is that it takes time, a lot of hard work and many long hours of learning and planning.

You have to keep calm and learn to roll with the punches, be brave, and not get discouraged or overwhelmed. You must also be persistent and consistent.

After listening to the wonderful speech J.K. Rowling gave to the Harvard graduates about “The benefits of Failure”, I have made her my very own patron Saint of Blogging. She certainly had the above-mentioned qualities and the tenacious mindset in spades.

One of the things she said in her talk was how very important it was not to take yourself too seriously or lose your sense of humour. Unexpected obstacles, problems, disappointments, and challenges are going to crop up. You are going to make mistakes and do unbelievably stupid things. (Take this from someone who has been there and got the T-shirt!) Get over yourself, it’s not the end of the world.

You are going to feel discouraged, misunderstood, tired, and exhausted, you may even feel like crying. Sometimes, you might  feel like throwing in the sponge and quitting DO NOT!

WHAT MOST PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW UNTIL THEY START, IS THAT BLOGGING IS TOUGH.

It is one of the most difficult things I have ever done. But this is partly because I did not have the foggiest idea of what a blog really was.

I was completely unprepared for the enormous learning curve involved and for the avalanche of information coming at me from every direction.

As for the technical side, I will not even go there, as it was and still is my greatest challenge day.  the truth is starting a blog is VERY challenging, and bloody hard work! it’s also full of surprises.

Having said all this I am genuinely not trying to discourage you or put you off. Quite the contrary, I am attempting to prepare you so you know exactly what to expect and do not give up.

THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF THIS POST IS TO WARN NEWBIES NOT TO GET THROWN BY THESE SURPRISES AND CHALLENGES.

These “Challenges are what makes blogging so fascinating. Overcoming them is what will one day fill you with increased confidence and quiet pride. “Forewarned is forearmed”- Prior knowledge of possible dangers, or problems gives people a tactical advantage.

My goal is to instill  “realistic” optimism whilst at the same time informing you of the many pitfalls and dangers, so you do not walk into the virtual blogging Arena unprepared – Like I did.

I got my first inkling of just how bad my lack of tech savvy was when in an effort to educate myself, I started to watch tutorials on Youtube. Every single one of the instructors seemed to make it a point of honor to go faster than the previous one. Just watching them whiz around the back end of their computer faster than my eye could follow, made me feel more and more stupid.

Then there were the beautiful famous Internet princesses, the Elite bloggers, sitting in their elegant minimalist TIDY offices next to a lovely orchid, looking as if they did not have a care in the world. These ladies were the “Coup de Grace” and  final nail in the coffin of my battered self-esteem! They fascinated me, and I adored watching them. I hung on their every word and filled notebook after notebook with all their advice.

BUT as they nonchalantly split their screens without giving it a thought, took internet problems in their stride, and gave interviews and podcasts in such a laid-back manner, I started to feel that my computer illiteracy was perhaps so great, and such an insurmountable obstacle that I should perhaps call it a day, and give up.

My children big and small use their phones as an extension of their arm. Their generation was born with tech-savvy. BUT sadly they are useless when it comes to explaining. Much like the Youtube tutorials their explanations nearly always start too far ahead of what I am trying to understand! thus leaving out the vital missing piece I need. IF I try to point this out or interrupt, they roll their eyes ungraciously and look at me as if I am a moron. At which point I cannot resist reminding them that I taught them to use a spoon and a potty – this brings the lesson to an abrupt end.

As my lack of computer skills became more and more of a problem. I started to wonder, it there was something wrong with the way my brain was cabled – or whether I give off negative energy, as it seems I have only to sit in front of a computer for something to go wrong. Each time some clever Dick says: “Just have fun, play around with your computer, be curious, explore it you cannot break it “ I feel like rolling my eyes and have to bite my tongue to stop myself saying: “Want to be? just watch me”.

Feeling more and more incompetent and stupid was definitely NOT what I had signed on for.

NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS HAD I EVER IMAGINED BLOGGING COULD FEEL SO UTTERLY OVERWHELMING, DISCOURAGING, OR BREED SUCH SELF-DOUBT.

Very seldom do you hear anyone say it takes courage and bravery to make it as a blogger? But it does! you need to be VERY brave!

Blogging is not for the faint-hearted. This is why I say you need “Grit” and balls. It takes courage to face ourselves, and pick ourselves up and keep going.

Blogging is a school of hard knocks. Self-doubt and overwhelm are always lurking in the shadows, waiting for a chink in your defences.

Self-doubt and overwhelm, are insidious and sneaky, they are a blogger’s gremlins. It is when you are experiencing a run of failure, or disappointment, that you need to believe that if you keep going and hang in there, you will make it. At times like these, I think of Winston Churchill’s famous advice: “When you are walking through Hell, keep walking“ If you think this is a tad melodramatic just wait and see. For me it was my lack of computer skills, for you it might be something entirely different. But it is safe to say that most of us will encounter an obstacle or our own difficult challenge at one time or other.

The more invested and passionate you are about blogging the greater the danger to own your self-image. Why? Because You are putting yourself on the line. You are vulnerable.

As Brenée Brown says: “You are the man in the Arena, covered in blood and sweat, and you are “daring greatly”. You are about to find out if you can hack it. If you have what it takes, THAT my friend is very scary and frightening!

This brings me to the next potential danger I would like to warn Newbies about. I have called it the little “Self-limiting Belief Worm” – Once this nasty little guy gets into the apple, he gets to work burrowing deeper and deeper and chipping further away at your self-confidence. After my own self-confidence had taken it’s first battering because of my lack of tech savvy, this opened the door to a whole assortment of limiting beliefs which flooded me with so much self-doubt, I froze. At times I felt as if I had been turned to stone. I felt incapable of implementing or taking any kind of action

THE THREE BIGGEST CHALLENGES ALL BLOGGERS FACE AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER ARE PROCRASTINATION – RESISTANCE – AND PERFECTIONISM.

At one time it got so bad I genuinely felt as if some evil genie had cast a spell. I was STUCK and just could not seem to break free. These 3 monsters hit hard and went on to spawn 2 more little Gremlins; A compulsion to carry out seemingly endless research while at the same time getting seduced by every new online course on offer.

As many a new blogger has found, “Research” is not Action. Research can be a hidden form of Procrastination, and a MONUMENTAL thief of time. Meanwhile The honey-tongued hustlers never sleep and bombard you with their offers 24/7 – Believe me, it’s a jungle out there.

BLOGGING IS NOT FOR THE FAINT-HEARTED. IT SEPARATES THE BOYS FROM THE MEN, THE WINNERS FROM THE ALSO-RAN, THOSE WHO DO NOT GIVE UP AT THE FIRST, OR SECOND OR EVEN THIRD HURDLE, FROM THE REST OF THE PACK.

Learning how to master Procrastination and Resistance are vital if you want to be a happy successful blogger and have fun blogging, it is essential to understand why we procrastinate and how to stop letting this behavior rob you of your dreams and your life. You need the courage to see your great idea fail or your first course flop. It takes guts and persistence and a burning desire to get your message out there.

BUT IF YOU HAVE COURAGE, AND PERSISTENCE AND DO NOT GIVE UP BLOGGING IS ONE OF THE MOST REWARDING FASCINATING AND INTERESTING ACTIVITIES I CAN THINK OF.

Despite my very harrowing and difficult début, I fell in love with the world of blogging and became captivated by many of the famous bloggers. I have come to think of these Princes and princesses as an Elite – Internet Royalty who have climbed to dizzy heights.

It was not easy for them either. It took a colossal amount of courage and grit. Hours of work, of trial and error and failure and tears. BUT THEY DID IT!  When I get a little discouraged or weary these are the people who give me hope and energy. They built their virtual businesses by putting in an ENORMOUS amount of hard work…

THEY “DARED GREATLY”. THEY WERE PERSISTENT AND CONSISTENT AND BRAVE. AND THEY MADE IT.

blogging for beginners, online income

I am the most unlikely blogger you could hope to meet. I have never had the slightest desire to blog!

Nor have I ever wanted to write a book or even a short story. The very thought of producing regular content has always filled me with horror. It conjured up memories of school and the big black clouds which used to hover over me and spoil my week (and every waking moment) as the dreaded day for handing in my essays approached.

blogging million dollar hobby

Sometimes I get a little overwhelmed by all the work it takes to launch a blog and create online revenue. I begin to wonder if I have what it takes to make a success of this. When this happens I need to break the negative cycle and do something fun to remind myself why I wanted to start a blog and online business in the first place.

I have always loved reading articles about women entrepreneurs who have created a successful business around a hobby or something they were passionate about.

motivation, influence, affecting others

Build your blog and business on generosity.

This concept is something I have carried over from my counselling days. Blogging and counselling are very similar. Your are looking to inspire, help, and educate.

Counselling and blogging are also similar in that in both you are listening for the pain point.

The importance of asking and listening are as important in blogging as in counselling most people just listen for what they need from the other person.
