WRITE TO SOMEONE YOU KNOW AND TRUST
You will find it very difficult to write from the heart if you do not know who you are writing to. I did not really understand this concept until I joined the Elite Blog Academy (or EBA) course.
When I first heard the word AVATAR I immediately wondered if it had to do with the James Cameron films of the same name. The answer is NO but in a way yes. Avatar is blog language for your target reader. As bloggers, we are not writing to thousands or even hundreds of faceless people out there in cyberspace, we should instead be having a conversation with ONE single person. Someone we know intimately. Someone we trust, understand and wish to help and share with.
Puzzling? Not really.
To help us grasp this concept, one of our first assignments was to describe our ideal reader. This turned out to be one of the most useful and clever pieces of homework I have ever been set.
WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO TURN OUR AVATAR INTO A “GENUINE PERSON”.
She needed to become so real to us, there was not a corner of her existence we were not familiar with. We had to know how old she was, her marital status, her likes, and dislikes, worries, dreams. Her Tastes, her clothes, her ambitions and her hopes. What made her happy, what terrified her. What she feared, and what kept her up at night. We even had to give her a name.
By the time I was finished describing Tallulah, (I have always loved this name) I knew this woman, she was my soul sister, she was my best friend. I trusted her so completely I could tell her anything because I knew she would “get it”.
Why? Because although we might come from very different lives, and backgrounds, we had lived through many of the same things.
We were intimately acquainted with grief and sorrow. We had Shouldered the same responsibilities and experienced crippling financial problems. We were both plagued by crushing fears and worries.
But perhaps what connected us most of all were identical often paralysing feelings of self-doubt and anxiety about the future and our ability to steer our lives and the lives of our children in the right direction.
We were intimately familiar with the waves of panic that sometimes swamped us when we looked too far ahead. I did not have to explain how lonely it felt to be solely responsible for two young children. She knew and understood.
We had been in the trenches together and never wanted to go back there.
Most of all because of all this, we both had a very powerful WHY which was stronger than the terrible fear based RESISTANCE.
What we both wanted with every fiber of our being was to be safe. We wanted to build Financial and Emotional security.
BY THE TIME I HAD FINISHED THE ASSIGNMENT, I FELT AS IF I WERE LOOKING INTO A MIRROR AND SEEING MYSELF STARING BACK. IT WAS MAGIC. I WAS MY AVATAR! SHE WAS ME.
Finding WHO I was writing for made everything click for me. After months of indecision, and hesitation I was suddenly ALSO crystal clear What I wanted to write about. I had found my NICHE :
Mastering my limiting beliefs, and building multiple streams of income as a mature blogger.
